Welcome the Dark Half of the Year and celebrate the Hallowtide season in song, craft and memorial with Hearthsong Folk Arts, a Bethlehem-based nonprofit exploring global folk traditional arts and customs through performances, workshops and community gatherings. Join for an evening’s exploration of the history and living traditions of Samhain, All Souls and Halloween in the Celtic spirit. Learn a few simple and powerful folk songs of the afterlife and other worlds; engrave a prepared stick with a wood burning pen of your chosen “tree letter” in an introduction to Ireland’s archaic and mystical alphabet, the Ogham script; participate in a small candlelit ritual of pouring out cider in remembrance accompanied by Celtic harp. We gather in the Loft Theater of Bethlehem’s Ice House to recreate and forge old and new folk practices that help us connect to ourselves, our pasts and the world around us.
