Fig Giving Back: Camelot for Children

For nearly 40 years, Camelot for Children has been creating a world of magic and joy for children with special needs in Lehigh Valley, offering free, year-round programs that foster growth, friendship, and fun.

At Camelot for Children, magic isn’t just in fairy tales. For nearly 40 years, this nonprofit has brought joy and magic to families across Lehigh Valley by enriching the lives of children with special needs. Through free, year-round programming, Camelot for Children creates a welcoming home away from home, where children with medical complexities experience the fun and friendships that every childhood deserves. Every high-five, smile, and moment of connection is a testament to the unwavering dedication of the volunteers, buddies, and staff who make it all possible.

Emily Werner, Executive Director and a proud Camelot Mom, understands firsthand how children with special needs often miss out on social experiences due to health concerns. “Kids with unique needs miss out on fun experiences because their health comes first,” Emily explained. “By giving them the chance to play games, share laughter, and simply be heard, we help them grow beyond their diagnosis into confident individuals.”

Camelot creates a fun, educational environment where every child can thrive. Through field trips, guest speakers, and an enriching summer day camp, children develop problem-solving, communication, and emotional regulation skills in a safe environment with caring mentors. This comprehensive, community-driven approach benefits everyone involved. “We’re not just helping kids—we’re supporting future leaders and engaged citizens of the Lehigh Valley,” Emily shared. “And we do it all at no cost to families through our Buddy model.”

Buddies are a special part of the Camelot experience. These teen volunteers form genuine connections with children, offering friendship, excitement, and a sense of belonging. The impact goes both ways—buddies develop leadership skills, empathy, and lifelong memories while ensuring that Camelot’s kids have a truly special experience playing games and making memories.

Camelot also supports siblings and provides much-needed respite for parents and caregivers. Whether a child needs a space to feel understood or a family needs a community to lean on, Camelot welcomes them with open arms.

Camelot is only possible because of the community,” Emily emphasized. “There are so many ways to get involved, and I encourage people to be part of this incredible place.”
