A legacy of compassion: Justin K. McCarthy’s enduring impact on hospice care

A lasting legacy of kindness: Justin McCarthy’s impact on St. Luke’s hospice services.

Over a distinguished legal career spanning more than five decades, Justin K. McCarthy, Esq., built a legacy defined not only by professional success but by deep compassion and generosity. Among his most meaningful contributions was his unwavering support of St. Luke’s University Health Network, particularly its hospice programs, which continue to touch thousands of lives.

Justin, who passed away in August 2023 at age 95, served for many years on the Board of Trustees for St. Luke’s Visiting Nurses Association (VNA). He was a passionate advocate for hospice care, helping shape it into a vital part of the VNA’s services. His commitment went far beyond boardroom leadership—he donated more than $2 million to support St. Luke’s mission.

Lisa Giovanni, president of St. Luke’s VNA since 2012, remembers Justin as a kind, insightful presence. “He really cared about the organization,” she said. “He offered sound advice and supported us in so many ways. He was incredibly generous with his gifts and talents.”

In the early days, hospice care was unfamiliar to many. Justin’s early and vocal support helped establish its credibility and importance. “His vision laid the foundation for growth,” Lisa said. “His actions have reverberated through the years.”

Justin’s stepdaughter, Barbara Niedland McCarthy, said his dedication stemmed from a deep sense of kindness. “He understood the impact of these programs. Supporting their mission was very important to him.”

His contributions to the Hospice Endowment fund services not covered by insurance—bereavement support, remembrance events, staff education, and volunteer training. “His generosity narrows the gap between reimbursement and the services we offer,” Lisa said. “It’s our privilege to support families during such vulnerable times. His legacy makes that possible.”

Justin K. McCarthy’s life was a testament to the power of giving—and the enduring impact of compassion.
