Celebrating Music and Creativity in South Side Bethlehem

In Fig Lehigh Valley’s winter issue, the SouthSide Arts District showcases two staple South side Bethlehem businesses and their artistic talents.

Founded in 1976 by local musician Dave Fry, Godfrey Daniels Listening Room has become a beloved fixture in SouthSide Bethlehem’s music scene. Named after a W.C. Fields euphemism, the venue was created to offer artists an intimate, supportive space to share their stories through song. Over the years, Godfrey Daniels has hosted legendary acts like Ani DiFranco, David Bromberg, and Doc Watson, while launching the career of John Gorka through its renowned open mics.

A charming tradition at the venue is the use of “wooden nickels,” handed out with each ticket purchase. Worth 50 cents at the snack bar, these tokens never expire and can be collected and used at future shows, with many guests bringing back nickels from years past.

Current events at Godfrey Daniels include a diverse lineup of performances from local and touring musicians, along with workshops and open mics. In an era of digital entertainment, Godfrey Daniels stands as a testament to the enduring power of live music and human connection. Its mission goes beyond entertainment, fostering a community where artists can thrive and audiences can experience the magic of live performance. Today, it remains one of the longest-running acoustic music venues in the country.

Color Me Mine Lehigh Valley invites guests to bring creativity to life this season at their festive holiday paint party experiences, perfect for the whole family. The studio offers many interactive, hands-on ways to celebrate the joy of “painting memories” with holiday cheer.

Join in the fun at the Polar Express Story & Paint, a pajama-friendly event where parents and kids can enjoy a Polar Express read-along and decorate cupcakes. Families can also visit Old St. Nick at the Paint with Santa Party, where they will create a special handprint plate signed by Santa and enjoy story time, carol singing, cocoa, and cookies with the big guy himself.

As always, anyone can drop in for a solo painting session or come with friends and family to spend time together, whether to create new traditions or enjoy a casual night. Visitors are encouraged to bring their favorite snacks, BYOB, and choose from a wide selection of ceramics to paint. Popular options include mugs and platters, as well as show-stopping seasonal items like Christmas trees, figurines, and ornaments.
